ACNE skincare by Donna Maisey

Did you know that between 40 - 50% of adults between the ages of 20 - 40 have a low grade, persistent acne and oily skin? If you suffer from this condition, you know how distressing it can be.

What is acne?

Acne is a condition that affects the sebaceous follicles and hair follicles of the skin. It is most common on the face, but can occur on the neck, chest, back and shoulders. Acne tends to run in families, particularly severe acne.

What can you do?

Firstly, if your acne is severe you should visit your GP and ask to be referred to a Dermatologist. You will most likely be prescribed anti-biotic or perhaps a topical or systemic course of a vitamin A derived drug. If you are prescribed medication for acne, in almost all cases you should not use an exfoliating product during and in some instances up to 6 months after completion of the course. Please check the information provided with your medication or speak to your pharmacist.

Excellent skin care and hygiene are vitally important to remove the excess oils and bacteria that are associated with acne. Ensure you use products that are not pore blocking (non-comodegenic) and always follow a strict routine of thorough cleansing with a facial wash suited to your condition and lukewarm (never hot) water.

If the skin is not irritated and you are not on medication, use a gentle scrub twice a week to speed up removal of dead skin cells and help prevent pore clogging.

A mask is a great way to help refine the skin and absorb excess oils. If the skin is inflamed, a soothing, calming mask is beneficial.
Finish off with an oil-free moisturiser. Your skin may be oily but it can still lack in moisture (water).

Topical spot treatments can be especially beneficial as they will contain ingredients such as Benzyl Peroxide and Tea Tree which will help clear the breakouts and reduce bacteria.

In addition, lifestyle changes can often improve your skin. Try to reduce stress, drink plenty of water and limit your intake of caffeine and cigarettes, which may stimulate the adrenal glands and promote oil production.

And always remember never to pick or squeeze pimples, as you'll be left with an even bigger blemish and a scar to remember it by!
